Navigating the Personal Data Protection Act (UU PDP)

The adjustment period of UU PDP which will lapse on 17 october 2024 marks a significant step forward in Indonesia’s data protection landscape. Modeled after international standards such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UU PDP establishes a comprehensive legal framework to ensure the security and privacy of personal data.
This law introduces several key provisions that will have a profound impact on both businesses and individuals:
  • Consent and Control 
One of the cornerstones of  the UU PDP is the requirement for explicit consent before any personal data is collected, used, or shared. This provision empowers individuals, giving them control over their data. Organi-zations must now be more transparent and accountable in their data processing practices.
  • Rights of Data Subjects 
The law grants individuals various rights, including the right to access their data, request corrections, and  even demand deletion. These rights are crucial in ensuring that data subjects have a say in how their information is handled. It’s a paradigm shift from the previous lack of regulation, where personal data was  often mishandled without consequence.
